5 Sonoma, CA Sonoma, CA Full-time Full-time $29 - $30 an hour $29 - $30 an hour 2 days ago 2 days ago 2 days ago North Bay Children's Center (NBCC) seeks a motivated and passionate individual to join our Garden of Eatin' (GOE) team as a School Garden & Maintenance Specialist GMS .
This role involves overseeing the maintenance and enhancement of multiple school garden and outdoor play sites, collaborating with educators, students, volunteers, and fellow team members.
The Garden & Maintenance Specialist possesses the knowledge and skills to create year-round education gardens outdoor spaces that contribute to the learning and well-being of students, while fostering a sense of community involvement.
The GMS plays a pivotal role in the continued growth and long-term sustainability of every North Bay Children's Center site and the Garden of Eatin' program.
Responsibilities:
Gardens:
Oversee seasonal crop planning and planting aligned with the GOE program.
Seasonal preparation of garden beds for planting Supply soil, mulch, and other materials to gardens.
Maintain a bountiful year-round organic edible garden.
Pest management Irrigation installation, repair and maintenance.
Maintenance and Landscape:
Perform regular maintenance tasks such as weeding, watering, planting, and soil cultivation to ensure the vitality of all garden's outdoor areas.
Implement sustainable gardening practices for optimum health of plants and trees.
Landscape projects to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the outdoor areas.
Building and Refurbishing:
Construct and refurbish garden structures, benches, raised beds, and other outdoor elements to create inviting and functional outdoor learning and play environments.
Collaborate with teams to ensure the safe and efficient operation of garden infrastructure.
Greenhouse Management:
Manage greenhouse facilities, including seedling propagation, transplanting, and maintenance of optimal growing conditions.
Coordinate with educators to integrate greenhouse activities into the curriculum and provide students with hands-on learning experiences.
Interacting with Children and Teachers:
Foster a positive and inclusive environment for teachers and children to explore, learn, and engage with the gardens and outdoor spaces.
Team Collaboration and Leadership:
Collaborate with fellow team members to create year-round gardens.
Carry an open-minded approach when working at sites and with staff and children.
Plant and Tree Care:
Perform pruning, shaping, and care of plants and trees to maintain healthy growth and aesthetic appeal.
Educate students and volunteers on proper plant care techniques.
Travel and Site Management:
Travel to different school sites to oversee and manage garden outdoor spaces, ensuring consistency in maintenance and development across locations.
Maintain a thorough understanding of each site's unique requirements and challenges.
Qualifications:
Previous experience in gardening, landscaping, or related fields.
Strong knowledge of plant care, landscaping principles, and sustainable gardening practices as it relates to fruits, vegetables, edible plants, California Natives, perennials and trees.
Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people.
Effective communication skills for engaging with various stakeholders, including presenting garden-related information in various formats.
Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting and bending, in an outdoor setting.
Demonstrated leadership skills Flexibility to travel between school sites as needed.
Must have a passion for garden edible education, environmental stewardship, and promoting hands-on learning experiences.
